I bought this in a French 'Depot Vente' for a silly price having fallen for the carving. Going on what I saw in such consignment shops it would have started life fixed to the top of a 1930's French sideboard. Sideboards then were short but high with a marble top. The mirror placed on the marble was in the same wood as the sideboard itself.
The marble was a durable serving surface and at other times the mirror reflected whatever ornaments were placed on the sideboard. I guess these were probably high end sideboards.
Image three is the actual colour of the wood.
Length 120 cm. Height 50 cm.
would look nice hanging over a fire mantel ..nice score.
Thank you, Roy, it did once!
