Today, I was rummaging at a garage sale and bought this beautiful pair of Foo statues. I suspect its mid century, but it has numbers and Chinese writing underneath. Does anyone know what this means? I paid $10. (30cm height x 10 cm base)

Beautiful pair, you made a great bargain and find. I think they are Japanese, the 3 digit number can mean several things. Age is also difficult to pin point. Thanks for posting.

I think these will be Chinese, and have been made for ages!. I remember we had a pair of them when we lived in Malaysia in the 1960’s, and I brought a coloured pair in Penang, when we had a holiday there in the 1990’s!

I agree with that AdeleC, most of these are Chinese or a close neighbor's. The mark is not Chinese, I recognize it from other Japanese impressed marks, and the 3 digit number is even more of a rare circumstance. Possibly a Japanese blank pair of figurines and finished in Hong Kong mid to late 20th century,

The style of the Foo dog pair, seem more Japanese to me, meaning their curly fur, and sideway stance with turned head.

Here is one I think was produced in China.

While I did this search, I came across half a dozen or more of the exact match of the posted pair, plus some were in a dark yellow color on the same pair.
