My wife and I went to a local PA German craft festival a short while ago. There were many skilled craftsman demonstrating their talent.
My wife, Elaine, was drawn to the carvers who were making bird carvings and she told me that such a carving would make a great center piece on the dining rm. table. She always admired these delicate carvings, so, although they were a little pricey, we decided to buy one. It turned out that they sold several of them early in the morning and this was the last one that they had.
Here's a short story about a carving that I was involved with...….
This area of PA is known for their local transient carvers who went from farm to farm in the1929's & 1930's and paid for a meal or a night's sleep in the barn during the cold winter by carving a bird, a scene or a walking stick. A local carver named Reeder did such carvings of birds on walking sticks. I was fortunate enough to be the auctioneer who sold a carved bird on a walking stick at auction several years ago.
The owner was ready to through it in a burn barrel, when I stopped him.
I researched the walking stick carving and found it in a PA German carving book. The name Reeder was printed beside the carving.
I listed it in the advertising and sold it for the client for $850.00.
