Legras #2334 rose bowl, called "Boule Chatelaine" (chatelaine ball - I have no explanation why) in the 1898 Legras catalog. It stands a little over 4" (10.4 cm) tall with a 4¾" (12 cm) diameter. It has a typically Legras clear-cased pink-and-black spatter over a white-on-clear spatter ground. The underside shows a neatly ground pontil mark.

Too cheap and pretty to leave on the thrift store shelf. It has a surprisingly contemporary look for something well over 100 years old.

Yes, very contemporary look, and to find a 100 year old piece of glass in an op shop? Not heard of here in Aus!
How did you ID it so easily? It looks quite generic to this noob.

Thanks Karen. Just lucky on this one - I had been looking at the Legras catalog about a week before.

One of the meanings of "chatelaine" is the mistress of a castle - so perhaps this was a reference to "the lady of the house" having responsibility for creating an elegant & welcoming environment by decorating the home with well - placed, & pretty vases of flowers?
It was a great find, & one which I would have gladly picked up too. Sometimes one can get remarkably lucky with op shops/thrift stores - I've had many a magical find over the years. Dogged persistence, & knowing your collecting area through research is the key!

That's a charming explanation of "chatelaine" - thank you for that. That Legras 1898 catalog is a wonderful document. Each of the many vases has a fanciful name. And you know how it works with this stuff - one enjoyable item acts like a magnet. There will likely be more soon.
I agree about the op/charity/thrift stores. I've pulled some amazing items out of them over the years.

Reading about Legras, I've learned this type of glass may have first appeared in 1890s catalogs but it was made until 1930 - still old but maybe not quite as old as I originally thought.

I have just found this post which is filling in my knowledge
I have posted pics of my pair of spatter rose bowls which are remarkably similar to yours apart from the colours and the fact that you have ground pontils. Mine are rough
So perhaps mine are Stevens & Williams UK made after all?
