These are my Lion Dogs, bought in 1993 in Penang in Malaysia. They've lived on my window sill ever since, guarding my home! I've put them on here for comparison to the turquoise dogs put on recently. They are 25cm tall, and have numbers imprinted on the base. The also have the remains of stamps, but they are unreadable.
I love the colors in your foo dogs! The colors take away some of that fierce look - these, I could give a pat on the head. :-)
I love these little foo dogs- the colours make them seem so bright and cheerful!

The foo dogs were a mythical Chinese animal which were their creation based on their Pekinese dogs, and the lion, which was favored by many Western Aristocracy symbols.
Not sure when this happened, but it is a common cultural entity in China, Often made as a decorative statues as a pair, with male holding a ball and female holding a puppy.
They were made in all kinds of materials and from tiny to huge sizes. Chinese temples had them at their entrance. Of course after Communism rule in 1949, religious artifacts were not important. But the Chinese are very loyal to their historical figures and their meaning.
Other Asian countries made their own versions, especially Japan.
