This is a lovely Loetz Art Deco Papillon vase. Cobalt Papillon graduating into Candia Papillon. It has a round paper label. It is larger than I expected it to be, 8"h x 8"w.

    Thanks for looking!

Hi Laura, I have one of these in a smaller size that I bought from Tony. I am suspicious that they are modern because of the conspicuous lack of any wear on the bottom. Have you tracked down the history of this label? Thanks.

Hi Sammyz, when I bought it I had some doubts as well. So when it arrived I was happy to see it did have some wear on the bottom. I replaced the third picture so you can take a better look at the wear on this vase.

I only found a drawing of the paper label on a website on all kinds of antiques. The drawing didn’t offer any additional information. I will keep searching. Does yours have a label?

Nope, no label on mine. Thanks.

Sammyz, I will ask the Loetz Collectors Group on Facebook what they think about it. Are you a member or should I keep you posted here?

Hi Laura. I am not a member but do check it every once in a while.

Any consensus on this vase/decor? I see that Marie Kirschner has 5 or 6 ball vase designs in the Ricke reference book. Could it be one of hers? The largest of her designs seems to bulge out a bit around the center. My vase is quite small and is almost perfectly round, like her smaller designs.

The people who responded to my post on Facebook all believe it is Loetz. No luck in
finding the right PN, however. Do you happen to know the PNs of the Marie Kirschner vases? I would like to take a look. This vase also bulges out a bit around the center, but it is easier to feel than to see.

I do know one other example of this shape, a pink Orbulin vase 6 1/2” tall.
    9. Sammyz Sammyz, 5 years ago
OMG, I bet the Orbulin is stunning.

      The Kirschner PN's are: 1090/48, 50, 51 are most round ca 1901.

PN 1090/129 and 130 come in 3 different sizes each ca 1903. The drawing of the 129 in the largest size seems to be a bit elliptical.

PN 1090/232 is the largest ca 1909.

Thanks, I found them. I see what you mean about PN 1090/129. But I am not sure, the opening of my vase is quite narrow, I don't think it matches her designs.
By the way, how do you know the designs are from 1901 and 1903? Is it in band 2 of the Ricke reference book? I have the CD-ROM and I can't find any dates.
    11. Sammyz Sammyz, 5 years ago
The Ricke book has the dates up in the top left corner of the left facing page.

      Hi
      Laura
I believe your vase as being cut down, that explain why you couldn't find a part number, i think originally this vase was a double gourd.
Here see an example in Crete papillon.

Hi Alan, Thanks for your input! I considered this option as well, but I couldn’t find a PN for a double gourd vase that big either because the height of this vase is 8.5”. That’s not to say this isn’t a cut down off course.

Sammyz, I forgot to ask, does yours have a fire polished rim?
    15. Sammyz Sammyz, 5 years ago
The rim is cut and it does not have a pontil.

Thanks, Sammy, your help on this one is much appreciated!
