Alfred & Samuel Ide of Medina, NY were issued patents for wire tighteners and fence stays, Patent# 504,353 Sept 5, 1893 and Patent# 532,733 Jan 15, 1895. The Salesman sample pictured demonstrated the effective use of their complete fence system. Note that the sample did not include barbs on the wire. The heavy springs on the right side kept the wire tight and allowed a little movement if an animal leaned up against the fence. The sample sitting below is a length of fence stay that has barbs inserted in the slots intended to be threaded on the fence. Was this used as a barbed wire or as a barbed stay attached to the smooth wire fence by another method? Mystery?
