I found this years ago, as is, while digging out back in St. John's NL, Canada. It was very close to the old Fort Townshend site that existed until 1871. I don't know if this could be from that era. There are numbers stamped into it so maybe not. It is completely iron and all one piece. Does anyone have an idea who made it or how old it is?

I wouldn't think it is terribly old certainly not 1800's. It is or was a shingling hatchet but from the looks someone used it as a splitting wedge and beat the hell out of it with a maul.

Boy Scout hatchets looked a lot like this.
