I bought this at an estate sale this weekend, just because it was so unusual. Could anyone help me identify the maker? It is salt glazed, very deep brown slip (shiny) inside, with cobalt swooshes on the handles and the #4 and design also in cobalt. I've checked the internet over and over and can't find anything similar. Thanks! Heidi
The 4 means four gallons. The description you provided and the photo to me makes it sounds like a crock made by F. A. Plaisted of Gardiner, Maine which was in business from 1855 - 1876. I could be wrong, of course - it's hard to say for certain when there is no mark.
