My client has no information or idea about box. She received box in a divorce settlement from prominent family (she is not allowed to disclose the family name). She has had box over 30 years in her possession. Pictures do not do it justice. The design and craftsmanship is uncanny. No makers mark or stamps of any kind. Inside has silk

Very unusual antique piece, the shell, grasshoppers & bird on top are fascinating and the gargoyle appears to be guarding a treasure inside (or perhaps it once had)

i believe it's french - with the grasshoppers, snail shell and even the burlwood and griffons. it's beautiful. probably a tea-caddy? or sugar box? period - Victorian - reminds me of some great majolica pieces.
