This is NOT an original Samurai Warrior's Short Sword. I purchased it from a dealer who deals in edged weapons. It is called a "TANTO" and was the short sword that was carries by a Samurai Warrior along with their Katana (long blade). They often kept the Tanto in their Obi (sash).
The Tanto was often used by a Samurai Warrior if he performed the ritual of Hari-Kari or "Seppuku" or the act of suicide to protect their honor from disgrace.
These blades were hand forged in a ritual process that were hammer folded many, many times to insure it's purity. Then the blade is shaped and honed to a razor edge. The bone handle is covered with a woven silk binding. The sheath also appears to be made from bone and is decorated with a pewter end cap.
This modern replica is fashioned with a carving of a samurai warrior on the end of the sheath .
