i did not believe this could possibly be a real pre-colombian piece until i got it home and examined it more closely and now, i'm convinced that it is. what do you folks think? it's 22 inches high. it looks very similar - Mayan, i think. Maybe Aztec? I need to do a lot of research on it. I picked it up at a 2nd hand shop in Berkeley today.
is there a category for pre-columbian artifacts?
i think this might be Chancay or Chimu from Peru.
i believe it's from the Puruha culture of the Ecuadorian / Colombian border.
here's a much smaller one: https://www.bidsquare.com/online-auctions/artemis-gallery/tall-ecuadorian-puruha-anthropomorphic-pottery-vessel-1281517
You sure did find one...Exactly like yours!!! Nice research. I love it when it happens like that. So do you still have it? Bet it fetched a bit more than the other smaller one!!!
i haven't sold it. i like to study them and just spend time w/ the pre-colombian things i find. so many mysteries!
This piece is definitely from the northern coast of Ecuador. I have several of these. Check out this galley’s offerings. They also have a good selection of reading material.
