This is another postcard addressed to a George Junkin in Austin Texas 1920 who is a great grandchild of someone who has a picture on the wall of Robert E. Lee's resting place. With help, we finally figured out the persons name that these cards are addressed to in Austin. It's George Junkin and he must be the son of the well known -
Reverend George Junkin D.D., LL.D (November 1, 1790 – May 20, 1868
Confederate General Stonewall Jackson had been Junkin's friend and eventually son in law when Jackson was a teacher at the Virginia Military Institute, which also is located in Lexington.
George married Julia Rush Junkin (born Miller) on month day 1819, at age 28 at marriage place, Pennsylvania.
Julia was born on June 19 1795, in Mercer, Pennsylvania, United States.
They had one son: (George Junkin.)
Looks like George Jenkin care of T. J Jenkin?
Make that care of "G. D. Jenkin".
Aunt Julia sounds like and un-reconstructed Rebel.
'Its known this statue represents Lee as asleep not dead. He has on his spurs and on the other side lies his sword on which he has his hand showing that he is ready for action. Love Father's not written Tues came today and fills us with joy that you are doing so well. Lots of love "Aunt Julia"'
I think that Mr. George Jenkin is correct according to a stack of cards that are with this card. Some are written more clearly. This sender obviously lived there as she wrote on one card that they eat there every Sunday.
I keep looking at the name....I’m thinking it looks more like Junkin.
YOU GOT IT!
Reverend George Junkin D.D., LL.D (November 1, 1790 – May 20, 1868) was an American educator and Presbyterian minister who served as the first and third president of Lafayette College and later as president of Miami University and Washington College (now Washington and Lee University).
Confederate General Stonewall Jackson had been Junkin's friend and eventually son in law when Jackson was a teacher at the Virginia Military Institute, which also is located in Lexington.
HOW COULD George Junkin BE RECEIVING MAIL IN 1920?
Google ancestors of Mr Junkin.
I was just Googling ancestors of Robert E Lee and found a lengthy family tree.
Maybe you can find the same for the Junkin family.
Thank you. I just started reading all of these cards that came from the same people. I will try to better understand what's going on here by doing just what you said. I already found some interesting history. The guy that they are addressed to must be the reverends' only son who carried his name. Interesting but a little deep for me.
