This pewter brooch with brass and carnelian (or red glass?) accents, commemorates the Battersea Shield. I forgot to measure it but I guess it is about 3" x 1.5". The Battersea Shield is about 2000 years old and was found in the River Thames in London in 1857. This was a $1 thrift shop find. I could find only two examples using an Internet search, one with the red stone and one with a blue stone. Guessing this is from the 1960s? Pewter is one of my favorite metals. I was surprised to find that there is no category for Pewter Jewelry...

@valentino97 - LOL! The next piece I am putting up, I actually did find in a thrift store in St. Andrews, Scotland, but now no one will believe me. Sigh.

Thanks for loving my brooch plein-air-painter and valentino97!

Very nice- love that Celtic look to it- there was a very similar looking shield that was unearthed in Ireland a while back in a river/bog I think and has a boar symbol hidden on it somewhere? I adore the little jewels in yours though, a blue one would be very nice too!

Thanks for your comment LaurenRedmond and for loving my little brooch. I believe that I read about the other shield that you mentioned, but will take a look! I use a couple of archaeology news services. It is an interest of mine.

Thanks for your comment Eileen! I like this one a lot, too. I also really like that it led me to learn about the shield that this brooch commemorates as I am an archaeology buff.

I have one I got in a second hand shop in the 80's. It has a pink center stone.

First of all: I love your brooch! Those Celtic La Tène swirls are so beautiful and elegant.

A lot of antique Arts and Crafts/Art Nouveau/“Ruskin” brooches are made of pewter. Older and of course a different style from yours—but they do exist, so it’s odd there’s no category for pewter jewellery here. (The other day I was researching one such brooch that belonged to my grandmother and was thinking of posting it here… but how shall I classify it? ;)
