This large 4" brooch hails from the 1940s, an American Eagle design with red, white and dark blue-black enamel and rhinestone accents on probable pot metal. Unsigned & purchased from a seller of WW2 militaria.

Hmm, don't think I've ever seen an American eagle(bald eagle too I think?) done in shades of black and red but the colours are fantastic on him! He's like some sort of mythological thunderbird I think, and his pose is a very formidable looking swooping, very dramatic!

Thanks Lauren for your fabulous comment and description, it is a very dramatic eagle and my pictures don't do it justice, the enamel colors are very bright for their age and give his feathers a patriotic look. I can see a mythological bird here too, I think it's those curled claws that remind me of that
Yes Eileen it's good to remember our veterans today, all the men in my dad's time in our family served as those days (WW2, Korea) were very threatening to the US, I am always amazed at how folks lived thru those times. Just saw the movie remake of Midway which was America's answer to Pearl Harbor to Imperial Japan, it was so exciting with great plane combat scenes. Thank you so much Maureen for the super compliments and seeing the beauty in this piece, the enamel feathers are my favorite as they are in such good condition for their age and I love their ribbed texture. This oldie came from the rl site & perhaps due to its size it was quite costly but it was the most impressive eagle brooch I could find
