My latest arrival, a Victorian art glass hanging basket on a stand. Pieces like this are understandably rare - with their inherent fragility, it's a miracle that any have survived this long. Indeed, my last attempt at purchasing a similar item ended badly, with the stand damaged in the post due to insufficient packaging. Thankfully, this piece, purchased from a local seller in Australia, was packed with the utmost care.
Most likely English in origin, circa 1880s - 1890s, it consists of two parts - a clear stand with pincered decoration, & a ruby basket with a crimped rim. Items like this were made by various English firms such as John Walsh Walsh, Richardson's, Thomas Webb & Sons, Stuart & Sons, & Stevens & Williams.
Perfectly at home in another favourite of the Victorian era, a cottage garden (although mine has been established very recently).
It's perfectly integrated into the garden.I can see so many flowers and all of them grow in my garden too, although they are so separated.
Many thanks, Ivonne!
This is a very new garden bed, we made it only in the last 2 months & some of the plants went in the last few days...so it's still a work in progress. Originally it was just grass & three small birch saplings when we purchased the property last year. We dug up the lawn, & moved out two of the birches (they'd died anyway) & added a cherry blossom, camellia, & lots of perennial & annual flowers. In the coming week we're due for a heatwave so will need to look after all the new plants carefully.
How on earth did this delightful piece survive?
Your federation cottage is gorgeous IL! Lovely garden too.
Racer, I know, it's so amazing that this piece has endured in perfect condition. I have two other hanging baskets on stands, as well as a couple of stands missing baskets (plus one basket missing a stand).
Thanks so much for enjoying my house & garden (even more plants have gone in since that photo!). Can't quite believe that I'm coming up to my second Christmas here...
Oh!..how lovely...:-)
Many thanks, inky!
Sweet! And your place is a DREAM :-D
Thanks so much, kyratango! It's a dream for me, too...after a long, difficult search & so much upheaval, it's paradise found...
If it was that easy to find someone else would have found it before you...so was waiting for you! to find it..:-)
Yes, so true, inky...it happened when it was meant to happen. Funnily enough we'd tried & failed to buy a house across the road from this one in late 2016. The market was crazy here at the time, & our offer, though high, was beaten. Went thru so much angst over that, & then all kinds of other issues, far more important, came up thru 2017. So by the time we found this place in mid - 2018, our outlook & priorities were radically different, & the stars aligned...
I believe that what is meant to be..is, meant to be!..things just don’t fall in your lap and I believe with out at least!..a little effort, we are never truely content, appreciate and happy with what we have worked for.
