I found this buried in a thrift store recently - wondered if anyone here would know anything about it. I thought it might have been an awards piece, but really have no idea.

    Thanks for your help.

Just a comment and my two cents. Looking at the last picture I would think this is antler as opposed to bone. I have turned both on a lathe and the bone tends to have a marrow opening down the center where in antler it is usually non existent. I am not sure about ivory as in a tusk.

Thanks for the input, I never considered antler!

I decided to get an investigative/appraisal done at "Value My Stuff" - I learned a lot and feel it was worth it to find out that my gavel/hammer is probably carved from marine (walrus) ivory and not highly sought after, but interesting to go through the process. I love learning about older things! So much fun!

I am glad you pursued it and found out. Sometimes an appraisal is great and other times not so much but it can put the mind to rest to an extend. I have used the appraisal service several times and only once had less than expected results. I am passing things along to my sons and want to be informed and accurate, especially with the items of value. Thank you for sharing it.
