This vase is 8" high x 7.25" in diameter and pretty thick. It has a bit of black in it, in addition to red and yellow. I've been buying a lot of Joetsu's Kurata Craft Glass lately, mainly because I have been finding some pretty good deals. I've been passing on a few good deals as I've really wanted to add some pieces by other Japanese makers to my collection, instead, but I kept coming back to this one as I haven't seen anything else by Kurata like it. The seller made me a good deal so I "had to" pick it up. Too bad the label is a bit ragged.

What I like more and more about Kurata glass is the variation in styles, colors and forms. There are probably many unlabeled pieces of Kurata glass out there which will never be correctly attributed because of this.

KAREN! If you see this, check out my old post below. I was looking a Joetsu's 1990 catalog on their web site and noticed they had some glass trays that were reminiscent of the tray in the post. I figured it was Japanese based on research at the time. If you can give me your opinion of it that would be great! Thanks. Kevin

This is such an exciting vase Kevin! Kurata did a bit of this lattice style (I think I called it pin cushion ones but I don't know what the Victorian's called this decor).
The colours on this are so unusual they are almost weird, and that is just SO Japanese. The shape is classic for Kurata.
I can't believe the pieces you are finding! I reckon this is an 80s piece.
IMO Kurata are as good as Iwata, particularly with their off hand pieces.
I'm currently looking at your plate :)

Thanks Karen! I really like the vase. I've been looking at it for several days and kept coming back to it. The seller was really nice and great to work with. We made a deal that was satisfactory to both of us.

I am pretty good at shaking the tree for bargains! ;)

I wonder why Iwata is soooo expensive? Of course, I haven't checked to see if sellers are actually getting the prices they are asking... I should do that!

Iwata was not exported, and the pieces you see were either brought back from Japan, recently bought in volume in Japan and sold in the West, or for the true artist pieces have been part of an art glass collection.
The name has grown in exposure a lot of late. When I first started collecting Japanese glass the name was virtually unknown. The market has grabbed and run with it and prices often show an unrealistic expectation in my view.
I have some everyday pieces of Iwata and I have some one off pieces. In one of my posts I talked about prices:

Thanks Karen! Good to know. I read your earlier post, searched completed listings for Iwata glass on ebay and none of this high priced stuff has sold for the last several weeks. Apparently, collectors are on to the pricing disparity. I will be patient on this one!
