I know nothing about fancy rugs. I don't even know if this one is particularly fancy, but it was at the bins so I couldn't say no. It is hanging up right now because it has tabs ( that match fringless end) sewn into the back towards the end without the fringe. So maybe it could be either a wall hanging or a rug? It's exactly magic carpet size (48" x 35") though, so I'm still holding out hope someone might know how to turn it on. If anyone knows anything about these or has a genie I could borrow I'd be much obliged. Thanks!!

Okay, so I did the valuation thingy offered here and found out that it is a Qum silk rug from central Persia- silk on silk foundation. They dated it from the 1970s.
      Their description:
The ivory field with a central red and green lobed leaf edged medallion supported by meandering curvilinear vines issuing palmettes, flower heads and curled leaves, dark blue and ochre pendant floral spandrels within a red border enclosing continuous palmettes and flowering vines.
      Length is 45"
      Extra Notes:
The reverse knotting detail confirms this to be from central Persia. Qum is a relatively recent center for the production of decorative rugs, with workshops appearing there from 1927 onwards. Designs display a formal arrangement displaying flora and sometimes fauna motifs drawn in a curvilinear style based on a Persian city workshop style based on a Persian city workshop tradition dating back to the early 16th Century. The colors are typically from a Qum palette, the tones of which suggest a date of making as indicated.

They valued it anywhere from $1000- $2400, if I were to sell it. Not too shabby for something I literally pulled out of the Goodwill bins.

renedjkstra, I don't know any more about it than what I listed above that the appraiser told me. I don't know anything about Qum silk rugs or Kashan silk tapestries. Should I ask for another appraisal to clarify which it actually is? Do you have any website recommendations I could research myself? Thank you for your help. I appreciate it.

I'm checking out a couple different auction houses now. Thank you for those suggestions. I'll keep you posted as to what I find out!

I really question the silk on silk. To me, it looks like a good carpet but wool on cotton. Could be Persian but much more likely to be Turk.

I also doubt that appraisal. Rugs and or hangings...the market has bottomed out big time. This is likely to be in the 2-500 dollar range at most. The dyes look like synthetic and relatively new. Still, a great find for a thrift store!
