Here’s a nice marine painting - watercolor and gouache. The signature is obscured by the frame and my sister doesnt want me to take it out to check it so this is as close as i can get. I think it’s dutch.

Well, I'm from The Netherlands and it certainly seems Dutch to me .

It resembles the work of Garman Morris, but there we lots of British artists painting in this style ca 1890-1930ish. They painted the south coast of England, Brittany, Holland, Venice, etc. It was kind of "grand tour" for British watercolorists. There is a complete page on my art collection web site devoted on one such British artist (W. Stewart) who painted under multiple pseudonyms, but was probably really Frederick James Aldridge. I don't think this is his work but GM is a close match. Just google him..

But again, there were several British artists who painted in this style...

thanks Hel1. Thanks kwqd. i think it's a little earlier than that - 1880s-1910. i agree that it does look dutch. it's definitely gouache - possibly watercolor too.

i figured out who it is and it is an American painting by Benjamin Champney. i found a smaller one he did which is very similar and the signature matches what i could make out of this one.
