This was collected by s friend. He treated it like gold, and swore it was authentic. It was passed to me as well as other memorabilia from Native Americans. I am not sure about origin. I am also treating it like gold. He was an awesome collector. If anyone knows about it's origin I would love to hear it.

I would say it is an authentic tourist item.

I would be inclined to agree. This one has rabbit fur, a felt that isn't like any I have ever seen, and a few rare feathers. (Some added later). Brass appears old and handmade. I have seen reproductions and none seem as old. Not sure yet if antique and authentic.

I have to agree with that, authentic tourist, for sure. If it was something used in "battle", I seriously doubt it would have plastic beads. It also looks like it was turned on a lathe but besides that, it's a cool item. Maybe knowing what the mark is on it will help you, I believe it's a turtle figure. Love your pottery too!

Authentic would be made of steel not soft brass

      Iron/steel for sure.

bought an almost identical tomahawk 15 or so years ago-almost identical "turtle" and head. Haft on mine is ash drilled for smoking and does not look like a tourist product-have been trying to find info for 15 years without success-probably tourist-steel or brass not related to battle use-see Harold Peterson American indian tomahawks-hope you (we) finally get an answer on authenticity-regards! dick

Also, this looks like leather, where original should be sinew. Sinew when used fresh, tightens up really strong and doesn't stretch when gotten wet.
