I was given this Buddha years ago. It was a token of appreciation for some work I had done. I was wondering if anyone could tell me something about it ? It feels like ivory. I don’t know what the marking is On the bottom as it appears to be an X in a box. There are two holes on the back that I assume are for a chain ? There is also a loop on its head. I greatly appreciate your feedback.
I believe you have a netsuke—the 2 holes would accommodate a cord so it could be worn at a sash around the waist.
Thank you so much for your feedback Watchsearcher. At least I now have something to go on. I tried to heat a needle and penetrate the bottom to make sure it wasn’t made of resin, I couldn’t. I have a feeling It’s going to take a long time to find out the makers mark. Many of those pieces have stunning signatures, this one is just an X in a box.
If you live in a metro area there has to be Asian eateries where you could see if there is an elder worker who might know the mark. Another possibility is a local college etc. that might have a department that specializes in art, sculpture etc.

There are books on Netsuke so maybe start at your local library or look online....it’s very interesting reading about these tiny objects!

Thank you Renedijkstra- Yes, I never thought the quality was the greatest but it was the markings which I found interesting, a bit of an inigma. I’ll research the term “pojshon himotosho”.
