Phrenology Definition:
A psychological theory or analytical method based on the belief that certain mental faculties and character traits are indicated by the configurations of the skull.
Phrenologist head with hand-written cranial labels, entitled, "Fowler's Bust," and further inscribed, "Made and Sold by G.W. Twiss Practical Phrenologist. The third picture shows a similar bust (second from left) sold at a previous auction. The bust came with the two books pictured. I found these at a local antique store. The last photo is a book I purchased on line and is a case study of a certain individual.
The owner of the first rare book "Combe's Constitution of Man" was Elias W. Hale from Towanda, Pennsylvania. He owned Hale Opera House as well as being involved in many other pursuits. It is highly likely that he was also the owner of the bust as well as the following.
The owner of the second book "Fowler's Phrenology" by Wells, was J. Andrew Wilt, also from Towanda. Jacob Andrew Wilt was a bugler in the Civil War at age 15. He was in Company L, 18th Regiment of the Pennsylvania Cavalry as well as Company C , 3RD Regiment Pennsylvania Provisional Cavalry. He went on to become a teacher as well as a lawyer, serving on the Pennsylvania Supreme Court.
