This is a victorian french jet necklace and two bracelets. The necklace has a trombone clasp and the bracelets have box clasps and safety chains. The stones are facetted and appear very black. It's only if you hold the necklace in front of a bright light that you can see that it is black/redish. The red tells you it is french jet (glass) and not real jet. Even so today it is some nice pieces to wear and I often wear them. It is antique "costume jewelry":) I feel they are festive without being too glittery.
Why the term "french" jet was used is unknown. The glass beads and stones were usually made in the great glass making countries of Europe, such as Austria and the Czechoslovakia regions, and then sent through to other countries (including England and France) to be made into jewellery.
The setting on the back of these pieces makes me think the bracelets have the same maker while the necklace was made by someother company. The bracelets might be a little older due to the box clasp that are handmade.
Sombre yet elegant...
Beautiful necklace, very elegant
Thank you IronLace and Newfld!
Superb, and even more on you :-)
Happy New Year, Elisabethan!
Thank you very much Kyratango! Happy new year!
I red somewhere that if you hold up french jet (glass) against the light you will see some red color, even though it is opac (? Don't know if that is the right english word). Since it is glass you can tell if there is chip that it looks like glass. Real jet is fossiliced coal and will not be chipped the same way - of vourse you don't want that but in old pieces you might have them - and it will not be red if you hold it against the light. I have also red that real jet is lighter and doesn't feel as cold to the touch as glass. That sounds logical. A lot of french jet were maid and today they are also antiques and therefore nice to have even if they are not valuable or as nice as real whitby jet. My necklace is very black to the eye and the red is hard to see even when held up to very strong light, but it is there. The black will shine of a little red. I also have a chip on the back of one of the panels so it really looks like glass there. But yes it does shine in the modest wonderful myterious way when worn in the evening :)
... And Ms.ChrystalShip even if these are "only" french jet someone made an effort to make the bracelets with safety chains :)
Thank you Valentino! Yes 2 bracelets. One have smaller cabochons matching the smaller cabochons of the necklace so that bracelet has a thinner look. The other bracelet has 3 larg cabochons that are larger than any of those on the necklace and that bracelet graduates into smaller cabochons that are the same sice as the largest ones on the necklace. So that bracelet looks MORE and sparcles more due to the extra number of facetts. For partys I use that bracelet together with the necklace. The thinner bracelet I use when I want to be formal during a regular weekday. I am now looking for small earrings to go with that and longer ones to go with the "party set". A brooch would be nice too. I found them a few years back on an ebay auction. Think I payed like 70 euros all together, which was more than I had planed for. But I don't regret it. These pieces are very useful and can me mixed with other jewelry styles with dramatic effects. Looks great with victorian engraved silver pieces or with modern jewelry as well. These I will hold on to :)
Thanks for loving my post

And Val I see this as a set but you can see that the bracelets have the same setting on the back while the necklace is somewhat different. Ofcourse the flat setting makes a necklace nicer but I think the bracelet has another maker than the bracelets. The bracelets can be a little older.
Nice find!
Mrstyndall thank you!
