Purchased this at an antique mall. Tag described it as Early Native American Weaving, although I have my doubts. Approximately 20" x 20". It is somewhat stiff. Not cut from a larger piece as the ground cloth is hemmed to the front with no pattern weaving on it. Some of the forms are a pile and lines appear to be Soumak. The first photo is taken with what I think is the warp going left/right. I'd love to have a lead as to the origin of it.

Hello - actually this is a raffia weaving from Africa (Kuba people) - yours is a particularly nice one, in my opinion, by virtue of the elaborate pattern and apparent age/condition. There is a great deal of information available on line - here is one example https://exquisiteafricanart.com/project/kuba-shoowa-textile-0869/
      Enjoy!

Thank you! I do have a small book about Kuba cloth and thought it looked similar.

Kuba cloth! i found a few. i was in a family friend's home in mexico last year and they had a kuba cloth over 15 ft tall on the wall in the entry. it was spectacular! yours is a very nice one too.

Thank you. It does have thicker pile areas so from what I read, it may be kasai.
