    can anyone tell me anything about this piece of pottery. ie: artist name, time made, origin etc. a friend told me that it could possibly be special, as in artisan, rare, handmade.

      It's just the number 883, followed by a very sloppy "Italy."

      I would doubt if it is "artisan, rare, or handmade," since the "signature" has been repeated to the point it has become almost unreadable.

      Sorry I can't tell you any more about it, except that having seen this same type of "Italy" signature so often, it is easy to recognize that part.

      I'm not entirely sure but maybe it's Bitossi pottery. I have seen this pattern in orange but never in this blue / green color. I have seen other pieces of Bitossi that are marked in the same sloppy way.
