Any idea of its rarity? Original Kewpie soldier with prussian or german helmet coming out of an egg. Marking on bottom is hard to see but there is a crown for sure. (Couldn't get a good pic of it).

You have a very sought after Kewpie , there were a few variations of the soldier breaking out of egg in different military hats and Kewpie without military hat . Made by Goebel with crown mark kewpie doll/figurine . They are hard to find . Ensco Co made some reproductions in around the 1990s . Yours dates from around 1913-1920 . Wonderful piece !

      It belonged to my grandmother

It is valuable and I would surely treasure it . I am going to add this just for general knowledge not pertaining to your Kewpie as much as many People that have dolls will say it belonged to my Grandmother , But what they forget is Grandmothers was still buying dolls when she was 80 yrs old . So Grandma's things aren't always antique :-)

My mom recalled that as a young child, her mom kept matches in it. The item was given to my grandmother by her sister, who moved here from England in 1926.

Yours is a true antique! . I was not saying she wasn't it was just in response to " It was my Grandmothers" I was referring to others who believe if it was Grandma's it was old . Yours is the real thing :-)

:-) Keep the story with the Kewpie for future generations . It always nice to know the history of who owned and item and when they got it .
