About UMA-NO-ME-ZARA. When it is translated literally, it is "plate of the eye of a horse. The origin of the name is that the whirling pattern resembles the eye of a horse. It was fired in Seto in the Edo period. It is typical of old Seto ware. Tbese were used in taverns around Japan 2-300 years ago and symbolize the old artist hang-outs and are somewhat avant-garde in Japan.

this new one is MUCH larger than my other two. i love the rustic spontaneity of the designs of these over 200 year old plates. This one is more like a huge bowl at over 13 inches across and almost 3 inches deep!

I'm not so sure about the eye of a horse- I see a scallop shell in it actually but whatever we may see in it I think it's cool!

thanks Lauren. i agree with you, although sometimes i see the hysterical eye of a fearful horse in them. but they are beautiful, rustic, mysterious pieces!
