Made the 2 hour trek down for the first monthly antiques fair of the year, & picked up this nice little Victorian vase for a bargain price.
It is made from a single layer of transparent salmon pink glass, with a swirling ribbed pattern. The vase has a squat, bulbous form with pushed - in sides, & the applied green crested & crimped rim has also been pinched in the centre. Small, but busy all over with a variety of textures.
It measures around 12 cm tall, 9 cm across the widest point of the top rim, & 5 cm across the base, which has a rough, snapped pontil mark.
I think it may be of Bohemian origin. I have a couple of other small vases with similarities in their design which could potentially be by the same maker.
They gave it the works but it doesn't seem overdone!
Whoever made this was technically and aesthetically talented.
Worth the trek I think, but it is always fun to look around the market.
I haven't been for a while. Hopefully I can get there next month!
Yes, just what I thought, Karen...it's the beauty of Victorian glass that it is fancy & fanciful, yet it works perfectly.
