Every day one learns something new! I went to a store and noticed some lovely purple glass beads in a grab bag. I took my chances and bought it. When I got home, I looked for the purple beads. They were not there! What happened? Alexandrite glass is the answer.

The necklace is strung on a metal chain. I just don't like the clasp. I was thinking of switching the clasp from the little amethyst necklace that came in the same bag.

    Thanks for looking:)

ABSOLUTELY AGREE w/the 'learn something new everyday' -- especially when one hangs around CW it would seem?!! <applause>
I didn't know what 'Alexandrite' is either, but these Wikipedia links seem to help 'splain it -- thanks for your contribution to my 'learning something new' too!

Very beautiful both of them! I would leave them as they are. So is the alexandrite glass necklace really glas or stone? If glass, what is alexandrite glass made of to make the same effect?
Could the purple necklace be stone as well?

Ladies, yes, it's only glass - but quite remarkable one:) I wonder how they make it change colours. I will have to do a lot more reading.
Thanks so much for all of your comments!

Yes still beautiful and interesting! I was just trying to understand the "alexandrite" phenomenon. Still don't understand how they make the faux one :) ha ha
