This cased glass pot is 6" high x 7" diameter, no label, no maker's mark. The body and bottom are unpolished, rough glass with applied brown glass handles and an orange interior. It appears to be dirty or dusty, but I gave it a good soaking and scrubbing this was the result. The vase is translucent when held to bright light. It appears to be scavo glass, which approximates the look of Roman glass which has been buried for centuries. Several folks on glassmessages suspect it to be the work of Lafiore, a Mallorcan glass maker. After some research, I discovered that several Italian makers, including some Murano makers, also made/make scavo glass. I sent an email and some images to Lafiore but did not hear back from them.

I don't think it's Hokuyo at all and doubt it's even Japanese.

Thanks Karen! Someone on Glassmessages suggested Lafiore of Mallorca, Spain. I found this jar by them that has some similarities:

At one time, Lafiore made what is called Scavo glass, which is in the style of Roman and Etruscan glass. I don't see any on their web site, now. Looks like they made this during the 1980s...

Getting more comfortable with the idea that this may be Scavo glass, after some research. I also discovered that a lot of this style glass was made in Italy and by Murano glass houses.

Two votes on glassmessages for Lafiore for this jug. I think I will send them an image and ask if it is their work!
