Here are two Italian glass pieces, one with controlled bubbles and one with metallic textured glass, both in a golden hue, not marked, probably recent.

I decided to take them with the camera in the full sun lighting, as an experiment. Found that they were a bit over bright and hard to see the details, plus the shade created is quite harsh.

The clover shape item is a small dish with a shallow depth, good for candy or other small pieces. The other has definite rim cavities for cigarettes, hard to see, in an image, but felt as a horizontal dip flat base of 1/2 inch, and an inch and a 1/2 long. My little glass stir stick with green ball end, shows how a cigarette will be held on the edge.

Why the explanation? Because sellers would rather call an ashtray as something else, because many people have never smoked and today most public places don't allow it. Because some glass collectors are not sure themselves what constitute an ashtray and what does not meet that criteria.

Of course, you don't need to have an ashtray to smoke, a saucer or dish will fill that role quite easily for some.

Beautiful golden Murano bowls Lisa. Totally agree sellers don't like to advertise them as ashtrays as they may not appeal to non smokers. My feeling is hey, if it's beautiful and artistic, those pieces were accepted items for the times and a part of history - and yes, my parents the heavy smokers (I am a non) would use those little tinny trays or the standard black ceramic grooved bowls, or a paper coffee cup if it was handy lol!

Quite correct truthordare -- "you don't need to have an ashtray to smoke".

However, you also don't need to smoke to have an ashtray...?? ;-) ;-) ;-)

[I'm kinda trying to quit the na$ty habit myself, but if/when I do I *sure as heck* won't be getting rid of all my ashtrays...??!!! <lol>]
