These represent some of the unusual early barbed wire designs. At first glance the wire second from the bottom appears to have warning devices attached. The large flat washers were intended to slide down the wire to the next barb to protect an animal's hide if it moved parallel to the fence. Seems like it defeats the purpose of the wire itself. John C. Dameron was issued patent # 820,395 May 15, 1906. Its rarity suggests it didn't achieve acceptance.
