it stands a little less than 3 inches high and says 'India' with some numbers on the bottom. i've seen them but don't know how they were used or what for.

Thanks Alan2310. i actually collect mortars and pestles and have dozens and dozens of them. what are the weird handles for? it seems like it would balance on something very well.
Maybe it's a drool cup and the handles are for a strap to hang it around ones neck. :+)
Artfoot, good thought, never think about that, has mine as the same handle.
I guess it’s for carrying around.

Looking at these from a technical point of view, they to me are used for separating/concentrating substances by centrifugal force. The "Funny shaped handles" are actually the pivots and are placed above centre so that when they start to revolve the base swings out thus keeping the liquid substance inside the bucket.
Depending on the substance and speed used they maybe were used by hand driven speed by turning a handle to make butter and cheese from milk or some thing similar.
