Times when doctors are very needed make us recall St. Cosmas and St. Damian (?-287). They were Arab twins and doctors. They were also strong believers and wanted no money for their services. Under Roman emperor Diocletian (244-311) they refused to recant and so did also their younger brothers Anthimus, Leontius and Euprepius. In that way they became some of the first Christian martyrs. You can see them on this icon with the text '(The) holy non-avaricious'. Tempera on panel, covered by a ritza of silvered metal. Greek, probably from some time in the 19th century. 24.5 cm x 17.0 cm.
The inscription in Hellenic says: agioi anargyroi, meaning Saints anointed
