    2.5x2.5 by 1 1/8 tall. Black part inside is a magnet. Cleaning out Mom's house and nobody recognises it. Anyone know what it is?

      I think y'all are exactly on the right track with your 'paper clip holder' idea. Put the clips inside it, then one or 3 will generally always be stuck up on the 'magnet' part in the center for easy reach on your desktop, mebbe with an additional little 'shake' of it depending on however many paper clips one really *does* use in the course of a typical day at the office... ;-) :-)

      This one is much more funnerer than most similar little plastic things made today, in that it has the RoyalCrown RC labeling on it!! :-) :-) :-)

      More typical (these days) versions can be seen here, with the 'magnet' part being a simple ring around an opening on their tops, vs. the 'magnetic post' in the middle of its top opening in your example.
