Sorry if my set looks off i just added this to my collection today i think it is a work of art that speaks for itself the silver platter was dedicated to a person with the last name ward from the duluth railroad on jan 17th 1891 stamp is super interesting its a rogerssmith & co meriden of quadruple 8220 amazing solid weight on this piece. The smaller tea pot has incredible work engraved by the looks theres several difrent style flowers good eye catcher lid and bottom around have wavy smooth line patterns that match very well made stamp on it says wilcox silver plate co. Meriden.conn 5027 and a 5 under those numbers. My bigger tea pot is almost an exact replica of the smaller one besides the fact that it has a handle and could be put ontop of the holder stamp on it says wilcox silver plate co. Meriden.conn 5027.
Hey guys please shcool me im willing to learn and become a strong collector and fanatic i love all items i manage to obtain im new to sterling silver items coments and advise is welcome and thank you be safe from a collector friend.
Hi there all star! Welcome to CW. I hate to break the news to you but this is not sterling silver. It's 'silver plate', which means there is a coating of silver over mixed metal. And it's heavy because it's got material added to it at the bottom that adds the weight. Most items that are silver plated do not come this shiny after cleaning any patina off of them, especially when they are this old.
I'm certainly surprised at how nicely this has held up over the years though. Was this in the original box when you got it? I'm curious to know how it was wrapped when you received it. The employee these went to must have never taken them out of the box, is what I'm thinking and if it was "Sterling Silver" it would say so. But that's how we all learn about collecting certain items. You win some and you loose some. Remember this though, there is a collector for anything and everything! Just be careful what you pay for certain items.
Beautiful set — Ditto, also, what shareurpassion said above.
Hey daisy good evening and thank you for putting a little time and care to teach and advise someone really. Well i got this set today not even knowing i just liked it and got a good deal on the set it came just how you see it in the picture it looks a little dull maybe you dont notice it in the picture because i took it under my magnifier that has a built in white light guess it made it look nicer well im surely learning about this slowly this is my first set i thought it would be a bit more silver to these items cause i did the magnet trick and not one stick i guess i cant try that method with this kind of things i do that with my coins lol but well thank you much for reaching out to me if theres anything else you can add please do so im here to learn some im posting this vintage canvas painting next that i would want someone to atleast tell me about it that would be great to be more informed about what you have even if its not worth much stay safe.
