Found this metal at the goodwill, approx 8" tall x 3.5" wide, heavy metal, monogrammed GAS, not sure if it's a gas can, the bottom is closed in

It looks to me like it might be a "wine server" that would hold a bottle of anybody's favorite vintage of such (with the big rectangular opening such to show off that ever-so-special "label"?) to one's guests at a fancy dinner party or whatever. Insert the bottle in it, turn bottle so label shows, then fasten the 'loop' part of it over the bottle neck so you can otherwise serve your guests *and* show off your presumably good taste/deep pockets for whatever bottle of wine it really is...the initials probably those of its original fancy pants owners.
Any other marking on it anywhere besides the monogram that might suggest its maker, whether it is silver/pewter/plated, or anything else?
Oh wow, that is so interesting thanks, no other markings
A TOTAL guess on my part babyoak -- that's just what it looked like it might be at my 1st glance. I can't say I've ever seen another anything like it before, once more it just looks like maybe it could 'do that'. (vs. any kind of actual 'gasoline' container, which it definitely does *not* look like it might have been, again just to me anyway...??) For the record I'm also not anybody's definition of "wine connioseur" (sp?) nor "dinner party host"... ;-) :-)
Pls do keep us updated if you end up discovering any more info about it!!
:-) :-) :-)
a wine bottle caddy would be my guess as well. found one similar at WP
