Hull Standing Planter (Jardinier) — Green in Brass Frame, 1950-60s

Hull Pottery, Crooksville, Ohio — One of the more difficult to discover Hull Vintage pottery items is the large planter. This problem is understood to exist because people who bought planters actually used them. As a result, all but one (that I know of) that have been discovered and resold during the past decade have substantial problems: used, chipped, crazed ... other issues. I have known of a total of four others.

This example of the large stand “Danish” planters produced by the company is in almost Mint unused condition. The reason I categorize it as only “almost” is because of the shown darkening of the white clay of the unglazed area at the bottom of the vase: all else is perfect. The light green alternate glaze around the rim is known as all of green foam, green froth, green drip.

I have an equal (size, stand, condition is Mint) white one. I consider it not as interesting, because of lack of the froth top — which was standard for the white glaze jardiniers of this type. About half a decade ago, a long-time collector (publicly) offered to rehome two of this type: a lime green one and a white one. My white pottery/stand set does not come from that auction. Mine is mint; that one was not. The two here were purchased together at an antique store in Kalispell, Montana — about two decades ago.

Brenda Roberts dates this ... these as 1950s creations in her “Encyclopedia of Hull Pottery.” Joan Hull, in her publications, writes that they were made in the 1960s.
