Hi everyone. Any rock collectors out there? :) I need help with whatever type of rock this is. As you can see from the photos the one end is smooth and looks as if it could be polished...some type of crystal maybe? As you can see the rest is not so smooth and heavily pitted....like hundreds of mini asteriod craters. Very heavy for it's size of 8 in long by 6 in wide...any ideas? Thanks :)

Looks like limestone. A drop of vinegar on it should bubble. It appears to be some sort of fossil formation.

The pitted surface and shape makes me think of a fossilized sea sponge.

Could you provide more information? Where did you get it? Country, state, province? On land? Salt, Fresh Water? Glacier trail? Mountain? How long have you had it? Everything helps.

But without knowing more — looks like limestone from a fresh water area.

I really don't recall where I got it from...gift from a friend, I believe. Will try the vinegar test. Does it matter where I place the vinegar?

Your pictures are showing the same view but it would be helpful if you edit the post and show 4 different sides of the object.

This is old weathered brain coral. That should be lime based also.

Should I edit this post with the second set of photos or make another post? Unsure of the etiquette here and too old to be breaking rules anymore :)

Maybe pour vinegar over the entirety for the best result.

      Does the vinegar clean it?
    11. Sharky, 5 years ago
      ok will do...thanks :)

That one end that is flat and non-pitted....is that a past break from a larger rock? It almost appears to be a translucent gray.

Sharky, that's where the coral was broken off from the main piece or what it grew from. If there's a market for these, I can make a fortune. These lay on the shore or in the water anywhere brain coral grows or has grown.

Wow thanks everyone. Very interesting.....any idea to possible age?
