This Sherman set is in almost pristine condition. The opague stones are bright. All crystals are clear. It likely dates from the late 1940s, very early 1950s. The oval signature cartouche assists with time identification. The rhodium on the necklace matches that on the back of the earrings in quality. You will note the difference in the style of the back of this earring — when compared to those of the very first years of Sherman manufacture. This set might have been made immediately before transition to clip earrings. I’m going to think it is about a 1950 set; but welcome other opinions.
Necklace — 17”
Earrings — 5/8” x 1”
I really hate this one, but only because if people really knew about your hidden treasures they would be flabbergasted, and so jealous like me, this piece is the Bomb ! Like the old 80's song, you dropped a bomb on me, baby !~
I agree with your time casting as the oval signature tells all. I think white and near white was the only opague colour that never much went into the 60's or seventies very much, for some reason black was made with a fair amount of his last rectangular signature !~
Beautiful and classy set!
Spectacular Sherman!
Hello Phil — Pleased that you like this set. This was an unexpected discovery of last year. It has some unexpected weight that adds a certain quality. The reason I mention that is because I have the almost exact same necklace in blue opague ... and the wanted weighting isn’t there. Both signed Sherman. Always appreciate your expertise.
Hello Eileen — Thank you. I do like opague Sherman. Yet, I do collect other items, of course. I was once told that the reason there are so few opague Sherman sets is because they were manufactured in small quantities, and did not sell. I find that difficult to believe: they are certainly cherished today. Pristine ... or “pure, timeless beauties” — the power of words!
Mrstyndall — Thank you.
Newfld — Thank you.
I imagine maybe the opague stones may weigh more, but in my mind I don't think they should. You almost need someone in there with an extremely accurate scale to find out !
