In my love for many things Japanese, was their natural fiber textiles, silk, cotton and wool. They had four seasons to dress for traditionally, we see lovely colorful geishas with their splendid silk layered dress, the older women had a more subtle array of colora and designs, often meant for the season in color and fabric with several layers of garments.

Since the clothese were easily soiled, they were washed often, especially the under garments. The hot water baths were a community affair at the bath houses, and clean outfits were worn afterwarda.

My blue jacket is of medium weight and was never worn, acquired from Japan about 10 years ago, as a silk haori which attaches at the front with pretty woven ties, and a pale lining which has yellowed. The storage of silk pieces was carefully done but in spite of that, the years took their toll, yellowing, and rust like stains occured.

I find all their different summer and winter wardrobe fasinating and luxurious, The fabric can be used for other purposes, if not wearable, just the feel and the look of a great quality embroidered and designed silk is a pleasure.

Thanks Karen, I had to watch several movies made in Japan, and see what the other ladies wore to understand. Young single women were beautifully and brightly dressed, especially if they had rich patrons, and married women were much more subdued in the color and the decorative nature of their garments. Part of my attraction for these luxurious pieces.
