This Salish basket was made for John Morris McClelland who was the publisher for The Daily News until it was sold in 1999. Mr. McClelland was a historian and served on the boards of directors for the Associated Press and the Sigma Delta Chi journalism organization, of which he was national president in 1952. He was called a "forward thinker" and expanded his interests in many directions including cable television. He started one of the first cable companies, Cableview which was absorbed over the years into Comcast. One of his many interests included Native American artifacts and basketry. This basket was in his collection and the man I bought it from said he was told it was made for Mr. McClelland during one of his travels. It was auctioned off along with many of his other baskets. It now belongs to me, and I am honored to have it. It is not very old, probably made in the 1950's but the provenance along with the beauty of the basket made it something I wanted to own.
