Medal from Rev War or War 1812. Need help identifing.

This has been passed down through my family. Story says it was awarded to our ancestor during the Revolutionary War or maybe War 1812. It is about 3". I can not find anything like it and was hoping someone could identify it. If not as to who issued the medal, then help with the symbology on the shield that the eagle is holding.

I have been told that it had been looked at by a jeweler who said it was probable high quality platinum.
