Please help me better identify what I think are WWI items:
We have a military Gladstone Marble Mich U.S.A. Leather Sheath and a Military Bayonet. The sheath has Gladstone Marble MICH USA.
*The bayonet has embedded a picture of a hand holding something and "in U.S.A." and what appears to be #MN505. Check the close-up photos.
Not sure if Handle is missing because it was a bayonet attached to a rifle. Not sure if these older bayonets had handles.
***Sheath is in camouflage leather.
Why do you think it is a bayonet? It appears that it is not configured to attach to a rifle. More photos may assist.
The total length is 9.5" and the blade is about 6" leaving the handle at 3.5" really quite small. I cannot fit anymore pics. Thanks for your help.
Look carefully at the tang and you will see the logo of the Johnson file Company, a hand holding a hammer. Also you will see remains of the file teeth. The knife was made from a ground down metal cutting file. Not close to being a military grade bayonet.
It is obvious this was a file originally. Most files were hardened and could be ground down and used for other purposes. I buy worn out files and grind them down for wood turning on a lathe. This was never a bayonet. The sheath was in all probability just something found that it would fit in.
Thank you all for the information :-)
