Just went down into the basement and grabbed a few more boxes of Minitanks (by Roco!). The first pair are Wirbelwinds aka Flakpanzer IV.
The Wirbelwind was a quad 20mm anti-aircraft mount on a Panzer IV chassis. Worked best when extra tracer rounds were used. The idea was the keep aircraft away or make them miss not to necessarily shoot them down. Bonus when that happened. These were devastating when used on ground troops. Allied troops in WWII cried foul when they were used that way. But the US had their own version so fair enough.
The next are Self propelled 88mm guns. The 88 was originally an anti-aircraft gun but was discovered to be an excellent anti-tank gun. Despite the reputation of the Tiger tank vehicles like these were doing most of the damage. The dreaded Tigers were usually being repaired with engine and transmission problems. Plus these were much easier to build. The drawback was that they were only armored against small arms. Actually these were a lot like the American tank destroyers.
Perhaps next week a group photo of all the models I brought up tonight. Should be impressive.
