This is an old desk from my fathers factory is Saint Therese Quebec. I have no idea how old it is, maybe someone can tell by the dove tail on the drawer.
The top had a leather blotter that I was able to remove by putting wet rags on it to dissolve the wallpaper glue that likely was used to attach it. The leather had a nice gold design around the edges. I need to find a place to have the leather replaced, hopefully someone has a suggestion, preferably someone in Canada, and in my area.
There was also strips of veneer as decoration that was in rough shape that I removed by laying very wet old facecloths on the veneer, I left it for a couple of hours and it lifted off easily with a putty knife.
I would love to hear if anyone has a suggestion for the top of the desk.
Cheers!
My guess is Eastlake era. It's a very nice piece. The only thing I can think of is to find or ask a furniture dealer in your area. Maybe you could even go to an auction house or antique dealer in your area and ask there. Make sure you check the persons references or reviews before you do anything. Be well educated on them so you don't be sorry.
Thanks for the suggestions! I will do my homework!
A GOOGLE SEARCH (it is free) will bring up antiqueleathers.com among many others to supply a leather you install. It doesn't sound like you have been very kind to the desk.
