Update!!! (new #1 Picture) I found the sticker I thought was gone under the lid! The piece is for the tourist trade. dooh!! I purchased this back in the '90s while on a ski trip in Quebec Canada. Froze r arses off!! I got this item as a place for the wifey to store her rings, ear rings etc. It had a sticker on the bottom which said it was crafted by Native Inuit peoples. I spent I believe $9.00 US and the exchange rate at the time meant it was 15-16 Canadian dollars. I love the surface images, thou I'm not sure what they represent. A bird or eagle I'm guessing.

Found it, and it was suggested that it was argillite.........but also reminded me of bakelite, gutta percha as they too can be carved.
