      The numbers are most likely the 'serial number' of that particular phone. Don't forget that when these were used they technically always remained the "property" of the Telco, they then probably used those numbers to keep track of whichever any customer had however many of whatever kind of phone set, for billing/etc purposes.

      FLdeb, here's the quickest handy link I could find just now to show pictures of "#6 dry cell batteries" which your phone would have been equipped with, probably two or 3 of 'em, located in that now empty part of your phone cabinet box.
