We inherited this basket from the previous owners of our home and was told it was very old. We would love to get more information regarding its authenticity or where it might originate from.

It isn't Native American, it's African, a traditional style basket made by the Zulu, in South Africa. The "stacked" squares that make up the knob on the top, and the square plaited start on the bottom, are distinguishing features of these Zulu baskets. They are made from palm fiber.

The form is that of a Zulu beer basket, but the weaving technique is more what would be associated with a Zulu herb basket, since it is obviously not watertight. Perhaps it was just made for the tourist trade, rather than for local use.

The strainer is also made from palm fiber, and a traditional Zulu handicraft. It's referred to as a "beer strainer."
